Calvin Klein Catnip is perhaps coming soon to a zoo or wildlife sanctuary near you. According to both zookeepers and biologists, Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Men is a big hit with big cats–lions, tigers, cheetahs, jaguars, pumas and leopards.

To entice jaguars in Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve, biologists Rony Garcia and Jose Moreira of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Jaguar Conservation Program sprayed the cologne onto hidden cameras. It worked.

“It has been very useful using Obsession for Men to get the jaguars in front of these camera traps … and that allows us to estimate with greater confidence the genders and the numbers that live in each studied site,” Moreira told Reuters Television.

According to ABC News, “a whiff of the cologne, which has scents of musk, sandalwood and spice among others, can keep a jaguar’s attention long enough for researchers to get a clear shot of it using infrared cameras.”

The trick of using cologne to attract the big cats was discovered by Pat Thomas of the Bronx Zoo, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Zookeepers at the Brookfield Zoo, in the Chcago area, have also done some research. They’re reporting that all kinds of wild felines with advanced senses of smell are attracted to a number of commercial perfumes. Here, they’ve got a whole stash of high-priced perfumes to choose from, and the fragrances are keeping the animals occupied and playful.

“Different perfumes have a different response in the animals,” says Brookfield zookeeper Jay Petersen, adding that the hands down feline favorite is Obsession for Men. “This particular scent seems to be strongly attractive to wild animals and what it is is somewhat of a mystery,” he says.

Obsession’s recipe is a secret, but it’s said to contain vanilla and hints of green herbs. Whatever it is, it keeps the animals occupied or amused for up to 10 minutes or longer. The attraction to Estee Lauder’s Beautiful and Revlon’s Charlie only lasted seconds, researchers say, adding that they aren’t sure if the scents have a sexual impact, or if they trigger a playful or predatory response.
